Tiling project by Total Home Project

Tiling Contractors in Pretoria

Precision floor and wall tiling — Floor and wall tiling, large-format porcelain, bathroom and kitchen tiling, screeding, levelling and waterproofing beneath wet areas.

Tiling is unforgiving. Every error in a tiled surface is permanent, visible and expensive to correct, which is why preparation and setting out matter more in this trade than almost any other. A tiler who starts laying without checking levels, planning cut lines and confirming the substrate is sound will produce a floor you notice every day for the wrong reasons.

Total Home Project provides professional floor and wall tiling across Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand and Johannesburg for homes, apartments, offices, retail spaces and complexes.

Key benefits

  • Large format porcelain and ceramic specialists
  • Floor levelling and screeding included
  • Wet-area waterproofing before tiling
  • Laser-set levels and consistent grout lines
  • Skirting, trims and expansion joints
  • Silicone sealing to all wet junctions

Preparation and substrate

We check the substrate for flatness, cracks, movement and moisture before anything else. Uneven concrete floors are levelled with a self-levelling compound or screed; timber floors are assessed for deflection and overlaid with a suitable board where necessary; existing tiles may be tiled over only if they are firmly bonded and correctly primed. In bathrooms, showers, balconies and laundries we install a waterproof membrane before tiling — tiles and grout are not waterproof, and skipping this step is the single most common cause of damp appearing in the room next door a year later.

Setting out and installation

Setting out determines how a tiled surface reads. We plan the layout so cuts fall in the least conspicuous positions, so grout lines align between floor and wall where possible, and so door thresholds, drains and fittings land sensibly. Large-format porcelain requires a notched trowel size and back-buttering technique appropriate to the tile, a high-quality flexible adhesive, and levelling clips to eliminate lippage. Falls to drains in showers and balconies are formed in the screed, not fudged with adhesive. Expansion joints are provided at perimeters and across large areas.

Grouting and finishing

Grout colour changes the entire character of a tiled surface — a contrasting grout emphasises the grid, a matching grout makes the surface read as one plane. We use flexible cement-based grouts as standard and epoxy grouts where chemical or stain resistance is required. All internal corners and junctions between different materials are sealed with a colour-matched silicone rather than grout, because those junctions move and rigid grout will crack. Edges are finished with proper trims, and the completed surface is cleaned and sealed where the tile requires it, as natural stone generally does.

Tiling costs

Tiling is quoted per square metre for labour, with tiles, adhesive, grout and trims either supplied by you or supplied by us. Labour rates rise with tile size, complexity of the layout, the amount of cutting around fittings, whether levelling or screeding is required, and whether waterproofing is included. Small bathrooms are more expensive per square metre than open floors because of the ratio of cuts and detail to area. Our estimator gives you a realistic band and a site measure gives you an exact figure.

Choosing the right tile

Porcelain is denser, harder and less porous than ceramic and is the better choice for floors and outdoor areas. Ceramic is fine for walls. Rectified tiles allow very narrow grout joints but demand a flatter substrate. For outdoor and pool surrounds you need a slip rating appropriate to wet barefoot traffic. For high-traffic commercial areas you need an abrasion rating to match. We advise on all of this before you buy, and we will tell you if the tile you have chosen is not appropriate for where you intend to use it.
