Paving Contractors in Pretoria
Driveways, walkways and entertainment areas — Interlocking paving, cobbles, driveways, patios and walkways installed on a properly compacted base with correct falls and edge restraints.
Paving failures almost never happen because of the pavers. They happen because of what is underneath. A beautiful driveway laid on an inadequate base will rut under vehicle load, dip where stormwater collects, and spread at the edges until the pattern pulls apart. The visible product is the last ten percent of a paving job; the base, compaction, falls and edge restraint are the other ninety.
Total Home Project installs residential and commercial paving across Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand and Johannesburg — driveways, entertainment areas, pool surrounds, walkways, parking bays and access roads.

How we build a paved surface
We excavate to the depth required for the intended load, which is considerably deeper for a driveway carrying vehicles than for a garden path. Unsuitable material is removed and the subgrade is compacted. A layer of crushed stone sub-base is placed, watered and compacted in layers with a plate compactor or roller to achieve proper density, and the surface is shaped to the required falls so water runs to where you want it rather than towards your garage door or your neighbour's boundary. A bedding sand layer is screeded to a consistent depth, pavers are laid to the chosen pattern, cuts are made with a disc cutter, concrete edge restraints are cast, and the surface is vibrated and jointed with kiln-dried sand.
Drainage matters
Gauteng thunderstorms drop enormous volumes of water in a short time. Paving is largely impermeable, so every square metre you pave is water that has to go somewhere. We plan falls away from buildings, install channel drains where necessary, connect to existing stormwater where available, and consider permeable paving or gravel strips where infiltration is preferable. Getting this wrong causes water to pond against foundations, which leads directly to rising damp inside the house — an expensive problem created by a paving decision.
Paver types and patterns
Interlocking concrete pavers in bevel, tumbled or smooth finishes are the most common and most cost-effective choice, available in a wide range of colours. Cobbles give a more traditional appearance. Clay pavers hold colour exceptionally well. Large-format concrete slabs suit contemporary patios. Pattern affects both appearance and performance: herringbone provides the strongest interlock and is the correct choice for driveways and any surface carrying vehicles, while stretcher bond and basketweave suit pedestrian areas. We will recommend the right combination for the use, the architecture and the budget.
What paving costs
Paving is quoted per square metre and the base specification drives the price far more than the paver choice. Driveways cost more per square metre than walkways because of excavation depth, base thickness and compaction requirements. Site access, the volume of excavated material to be removed, existing surfaces requiring demolition, level changes requiring steps or retaining, and drainage works all affect the total. Our estimator provides an immediate guide and a site inspection gives you a firm written quotation.
Maintenance and sealing
Paving is low maintenance but not no maintenance. Joint sand washes out over time and should be topped up. Weeds establish in joints and are easily controlled. Oil stains on driveways should be treated promptly. Sealing a paved surface enhances colour, resists staining and stabilises joint sand, and is worth considering for entertainment areas and prominent driveways. A well-built paved surface should give you twenty years or more of service with only this basic attention.
